Will hemorrhoids go away on their own?

A common problem among Americans today is hemorrhoids. About one out of every two people are affected with this problem. Straining, sitting on the toilet for too long, constant diarrhea, prolonged constipation, obesity, and pregnancy are some of the more common causes of hemorrhoids. The problem with Americans today is their diet.

What are hemorrhoids? Hemorrhoids are veins, in the lower rectum, that have become inflamed and swollen. Mostly caused by straining and/or pregnancy, hemorrhoids are painful and difficult to manage without proper attention. There are two forms of hemorrhoids: internal hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids. As their names suggest, internal hemorrhoids occur inside the rectum and external hemorrhoids protrude from the anus.

With internal hemorrhoids, there is no discomfort. You may notice a small amount of blood on the toilet tissue during elimination, but there is no pain. On the other hand, external hemorrhoids can cause pain. Because of the protrusion, external hemorrhoids are notorious for itching and burning discomfort. External hemorrhoids have also been known to bleed. Bleeding from the rectum, however, is not solely related to hemorrhoids. If you experience bleeding for a long period of time, you may need to consider a visit to your colon specialist for proper diagnosis.

Will hemorrhoids go away on their own? Yes. You can get relief from hemorrhoids without a doctor’s visit. The first thing you should do is make sure you are not allowing your body to become constipated. Drinking plenty of water will eliminate constipation. Also, a diet high in fiber can keep your intestines from becoming impacted. If you don’t have time to eat the recommended daily allowances of fruits and vegetables, you may want to look into getting a fiber supplement such as Metamucil or Benefiber.

It can take anywhere from 3 to 7 days to get relief from hemorrhoids depending on how diligent you are with dietary changes. Over the counter medicines and creams are all useful in minimizing the uncomfortable symptoms of hemorrhoids. A sitz bath is another, non-medicinal way to ease the discomfort of hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are easily controlled if you are conscious of their causes and worked to exclude them from your daily routine.
